The Centre for the Study of African Economies (CSAE) is an economic research centre based within the Department of Economics at Oxford University. CSAE carries out economic research with a particular focus on Africa and its is to improve economic and social conditions in the poorest societies. The CSAE annual conference is held at St Catherine’s each March (during the Easter vacation) and conference papers address economic analysis of the broad issues relevant for economic development in Africa. The event consists of many parallel sessions plus plenary sessions and a keynote address and utilises the majority of the College’s meeting complex in order to meet these needs. Both the JCR Lounge and the Bernard Sunley Building are utilised for refreshment service to allow maximum flexibility in each area. Lunches and dinners for between 300 and 400 guests are provided on the core conference days with smaller meetings often taking place in the Mary Sunley Suite in the few days running up to the main sessions. Ensuite accommodation is provided to over 200 guests on the core event nights (with extra bed and breakfast accommodation on surrounding nights).
What the organiser’s say…
Every March we hold a conference on economic development at St Catherine’s College, where over 400 delegates participate in parallel presentation sessions. St Catherine’s provides meeting rooms to host these sessions and plenty of on-site accommodation for our international participants. As well as the presentation of new research, our conference provides researchers from around the globe with an important opportunity to network; the large dining hall at St Catherine’s is a bright and vibrant space for our delegates to meet over lunch and dinner, and our participants also make good use of the cosy JCR Lounge to continue their discussions. As our delegates come from far and wide, some like to remain close to the venue so it is reassuring to know that all they need is available on site. That said, Oxford city centre is just a short walk away for those participants who wish to unwind off site in the evenings. The venue is perfect for our conference. To top it all off, staff are very helpful and friendly, and are always on hand to assist both participants and conference organisers. So you can see why we come back every year…
