## B&B – Stay at the University of Oxford

### Stay at the Grade I listed St Catherine’s College, Oxford

Bed and breakfast in one of Britain’s most extraordinary settings – open to everyone, not just our conference guests.

## Why stay overnight?

- **Grade I listed rarity** – one of only a handful of post-war buildings in Britain to hold this status, designed by the celebrated Danish architect Arne Jacobsen, with the gardens carrying the same grade.
- **A complete work of art, not a pastiche** – Jacobsen designed everything from the buildings to the furniture and cutlery, so guests experience a genuinely unified piece of design history.
- **Comfort with character** – light, well-proportioned rooms, serviced daily with fresh linen and toiletries, and a 24-hour staffed Lodge for peace of mind.
- **A proper Oxford breakfast** – served in one of the largest and most striking college dining halls in the University.
- **Green space in the city centre** – riverside gardens and lawns just under a mile from the heart of Oxford, offering genuine calm alongside easy access to the sights.
- **A springboard for exploring** – walkable Oxford on the doorstep, with the Cotswolds, Blenheim Palace and Stratford-upon-Avon all within easy reach.

**Discover Oxford’s most unexpected architectural gem**

## University of Oxford cachet

There is a particular kind of magic to waking up inside an Oxford college. Not peering at one through a gate, not queuing for a ticket to glimpse a quad, but actually staying there:

- sleeping at a college that has watched over scholars since 1962 (and can trace its roots back to 1852)
- walking to breakfast across lawns still silvered with dew
- stepping out of the gates each morning into a university city that has been inspiring writers, thinkers and dreamers for nearly a thousand years.

Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world. At St Catherine’s College, known to friends simply as ‘St Catz’, we open our doors to visitors during university breaks, when our student rooms stand ready for guests rather than undergraduates.

Whether you are here to explore Oxford properly for the first time, to revisit old haunts, to break a longer journey through to the Cotswolds, or simply to treat yourself to somewhere different, we would love to welcome you.

## A Grade I listed masterpiece, not a chain hotel

Most people picture honey-coloured stone and mediaeval cloisters when they think of Oxford colleges. St Catz is something altogether more surprising. Designed in the 1960s by the celebrated Danish architect Arne Jacobsen (whose furniture and lighting still grace design-conscious homes around the world), our college is a masterpiece of clean lines, glass, water and light.

It is so highly regarded that both the buildings and the gardens are Grade I listed, a rare distinction for anything built after the Second World War, and one that places St Catz among a very select handful of UK 20th century sites to be recognised as being of the highest architectural importance.

Jacobsen did not simply design a building; he designed an entire experience, down to the cutlery, the door handles and the planting in the borders. Staying here means living inside a complete work of art for a night or two – something no hotel, however smart, can quite offer. Our motto, Nova et Vetera, ‘the new and the old’, sums up exactly what makes St Catz special: centuries of Oxford scholarship housed within a strikingly modern setting, rather than a pastiche of one or the other.

## Comfort, quietly done well

Our rooms are simple, light and beautifully proportioned, in keeping with Jacobsen’s original vision, and are serviced daily with fresh linen, towels and toiletries provided. Many are ensuite, with private shower and toilet, and all come with tea- and coffee-making facilities so you can start the morning gently, looking out over lawns, mature trees and the open countryside that borders the college. Hairdryers and other essentials are available from our Lodge, which is staffed around the clock, so there is always a friendly, knowledgeable face on hand should you need anything.

This is not five-star hotel styling; you will not find a television in your room. What you will find instead is something harder to buy: genuine calm, thoughtful design and the quiet privilege of having an entire Oxford college with its gardens, courtyards and riverside walks largely to yourself.

## Breakfast worth getting up for

Mornings begin in our magnificent dining hall. It has the largest capacity (350) of any Oxford college and is a showpiece of Jacobsen’s design with its striking Cumberland slate floor and bespoke furnishings beneath a canopy of glass. A generous buffet-style continental spread or full English awaits, prepared by our in-house team using the freshest local ingredients. It is the sort of setting that makes you linger a little longer over a second pot of tea, watching the light move across the room, before heading out to explore.

## A tranquil garden retreat, moments from the centre

St Catz sits just under a mile from the heart of Oxford, close enough to wander into the city in minutes, yet far enough to feel wonderfully removed from it. Our grounds run down to the banks of the River Cherwell, and the landscape, every bit as carefully composed as the buildings themselves, was conceived by Jacobsen as a single, unified design of water gardens, lawns and sculpture.

Guests often tell us that the walk from their room to breakfast, past the water garden and beneath the trees, is one of the loveliest parts of their stay. It is a rare thing in a city centre – tranquil green space, peaceful quiet and a proper sense of arrival.

## Why Oxford, and why now?

Oxford has been a seat of learning since the 11th century and it shows: this compact, walkable city is home to around 1,500 listed buildings, 43 historic University colleges, world-class museums including the Ashmolean and the Pitt Rivers, the beautiful Botanic Garden, and a wonderful array of independent shops, tea rooms and theatres.

Hire a punt and drift along the river on a fine afternoon, climb a tower for a view across the famous dreaming spires, browse the Covered Market, or simply lose an hour in a second-hand bookshop. It is easy to see why so many writers and artists have found inspiration here. Film buffs and literature lovers will recognise corners of the city from countless:

- screen adaptations – Harry Potter, Morse/Lewis/Endeavour and Wonka
- novels – Brideshead Revisited (Evelyn Waugh), Gaudy Night (Dorothy L. Sayers), the Inspector Morse series (Colin Dexter) and His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman).

For those wanting to venture further, the beautiful Cotswolds villages, the grandeur of Blenheim Palace and Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon are all within easy reach, making St Catz a genuinely useful base for exploring this corner of England, not simply a stop for the night.

## Planning your stay

Our bed and breakfast accommodation is available to visitors during university holiday periods, when student rooms are free, so it is always worth checking availability and booking ahead rather than leaving it to chance.

Check-in is from 2pm and check-out by 10am, with our Lodge team on hand throughout your stay for anything you might need. Oxford’s centre is best explored on foot or by public transport because parking within the city is limited; [Park and Ride](https://www.oxford.gov.uk/parkandridesites) makes arriving by car straightforward.

Whether you are marking a special occasion, indulging a love of modernist architecture, or simply looking for somewhere with character, we would be delighted to welcome you to St Catz.
